The DEPC Ready Schools Initiative supports elementary schools in Edgecombe and Nash Counties that are ready to serve as ready school leaders in the community and state.  DEPC is supporting schools and community to build their capacity to model ready schools best practices, including:

  • teaching diverse learners
  • supporting effective transitions
  • alignment of Pre-K through grade 3
  • other research-based strategies

To accomplish this, Ready Schools Coordinators coach elementary schools through a Ready Schools Innovation Awards (RSIA) process.

Elementary schools form a community-school team consisting of school administration and staff, parents, early care providers, and community members (business, civic, and faith-based).  This team completes the High/Scope Ready School Assessment (RSA). The RSA allows teams to develop a profile of their school’s readiness in 8 dimensions of Ready Schools.  Using the results, each school creates a one-year workplan and budget to strengthen their ability to move toward becoming a model ready school.

Schools who participate in the RSIA process receive up to $12,500 to implement this work.  Upon completion of the initial RSIA process, schools may receive continued support for their Ready Schools work through ongoing mini-grants.
